An attempt at humor

leave a comment »

So do liberals have a better sense of humor than conservative? In the type of society-advancing research that only your tax dollars can afford, the New York Times explores:

The researchers picked out a variety of jokes — good, bad, conventional, absurdist — to look for differences in reactions between self-described liberals and conservatives.

They expected conservatives to like traditional jokes, like the one about the golfing widower, that reinforce racial and gender stereotypes. And because liberals had previously been reported to be more flexible and open to new ideas, the researchers expected them to get a bigger laugh out of unconventional humor, like Jack Handey’s “Deep Thoughts” about the reindeer effect and Hambone.

Taking it on the chin

Do Republicans just provide more material for comics? Or are they simply not hiding their bias this time? To be honest, this is a pretty ridiculous debate. I am almost as tired of hearing about this as I am of hearing about how X News Network has a conservative bias, whereas Y News Network is practically communist. These bias battles are pointless and distract from the real debates in our society and culture. It can still be a little fun to talk about sometimes though:

From Sept. 1 through Friday, the Republicans were the target of 475 jokes by Jay Leno and David Letterman alone. The Democratic team of Obama and Joseph Biden were the victim 69 times, according to the Center for Media and Public Affairs, which has been tracking such data since 1988. That’s nearly a 7-to-1 ratio.

In no other campaign over the past 20 years has one party’s ticket been jabbed more than the other by even a 2-to-1 ratio, said Robert Lichter, a George Mason University professor and head of the center.

You stay classy, Senator Kerry

with one comment

Yeah, this is a good time:

“Barack got asked the famous boxers or briefs question,” Kerry went on. “I was tempted to say commando.”

The senator said Obama successfully parried that question but that John McCain, the GOP nominee, had some problems.

“Then they asked McCain and McCain said, ‘Depends,’” Kerry said to lots of laughter from the crowd.
